Overview

A neighbourhood Chinese tuition centre that knows the local exams inside out

Many children in Singapore grow up in a mostly English-speaking environment, so Chinese can feel like an uphill subject, especially when it comes to writing. Limited vocabulary and a shaky sense of grammar make it hard to build complete sentences, let alone well-structured compositions.

Star River was created to solve exactly that problem. Rather than simply repeating what schools already teach, we rework and extend the material so that every lesson genuinely moves a child forward. Our teaching follows Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) Chinese language syllabus closely, and our primary focus has always been composition, the part of the paper most students find hardest.

Because we are a boutique centre in the heart of Tiong Bahru rather than a large chain, we can keep classes small and teaching personal. Teachers notice when a child is struggling, adjust their approach to suit different learning styles, and keep parents updated on progress. We make a point of not neglecting weaker students, every student counts, which is why we also run holiday classes for those who need time to catch up.

Over the years this approach has helped students across Tiong Bahru and the surrounding estates improve their grades and, just as importantly, rediscover an interest in the Chinese language.

Our Specialism

Composition is what we do best

Writing is the single hardest part of Chinese for most Singapore students, and it is where Star River concentrates its expertise. We don’t just hand out model essays to memorise, we teach the building blocks of good writing so children can produce their own.

Lessons systematically grow each student’s bank of suitable vocabulary, idioms (成语) and well-constructed sentences, then show them how to apply those tools to real exam topics. Students learn to plan a piece, open with impact, develop ideas logically and finish with a strong conclusion.

What composition lessons cover

  • Planning and structuring essays under exam conditions
  • Descriptive language, dialogue and “show, don’t tell” techniques
  • Genre coverage: narrative, picture composition and situational writing
  • Personalised marking with clear, actionable feedback
A complete language education

Beyond composition

A confident reader, speaker and listener writes better too. Alongside our composition focus, we strengthen every component of the language so your child grows into a well-rounded, capable user of Chinese.

Comprehension (理解)

Close-reading and answering techniques for open-ended and multiple-choice passages, including vocabulary in context, inference and summary.

Oral & conversation (口试)

Reading-aloud fluency, pronunciation and tone, plus structured practice for picture-based conversation and the video stimulus components.

Listening (听力)

Training the ear for the listening comprehension paper, from everyday dialogue to announcements and longer passages.

Mdm Li Xiu Rong · 李秀蓉

Founder & Principal, Star River Language School

Mdm Li has devoted over 20 years to education in both China and Singapore, and understands the local education system and its linguistic and cultural background intimately. She founded Star River in August 2013 with a simple aim: to help Singapore children fall in love with writing.

A specialist in composition, she has developed her own MOE-aligned composition book, one of Singapore’s best-selling Chinese assessment titles, which gives students a ready bank of suitable vocabulary and well-constructed sentences to draw on in their own essays. Her teachers are experienced Chinese educators, many trained at teaching colleges in China, who share her belief in teaching to each child’s aptitude (因材施教).

“We don’t just teach to the exam, we give children the vocabulary, structure and confidence to write essays they’re proud of.”
